That's true for some foreigns learning Chinese. Mostly foreigners know little about the feature of the a new language, would rather believe the prevailing saying, but actually each one has his or her own sensitivity.
I think for foreigners Cantonese does have some ways pronounced easier that Mandarin. For example, like p, t, k, m as suffix of a word's ending accent, you'll never see Mandarin pinyin spelled like this but Cantonese does.
