克里夫·理查德是英国的猫王，在甲壳虫乐队还没有出道之前，他统治着20世纪50年代和60年代初期的英国乐坛。他有众多优秀作品，本人对音乐有一种本能的感觉。他在50年代后期的几部作品让英国的青少年对乡村摇滚有了初步的认知。在1958年到1969年之间，理查德至少有43首曲子进入金曲排行榜前20名。

在英国，理查德广受欢迎，直到甲壳虫乐队兴起之后，他的人气才略略低落。但他在美国的市场则狭窄很多，即使在他的巅峰时期，他的作品也只有三首进入金曲排行榜前40位，分别是：1959年的《Living Doll》、1963年的《It`s All in the Game》、1976年的《Devil Woman》。《Devil Woman》1976年进入美国金曲排行榜前十位。在英国乐坛，理查德的地位非常崇高，他是英国有史以来最红的歌手之一。
