Of course, the PRC will never go for something like that. It's all about the 'harmonious society'. This is just a euphemism for authoritarianism. By cutting off language (prohibiting it, deriding it as uncultured) they can cut off the rest of a populace. Everyone in China is expected to love the ComChi**, do what they say, and don't even try to create your own personality. The other Chinese languages provide a means for a separate identity for its speakers. This is something that BJ loathes and crushes with an iron fist. They will systematically destroy democracy, capitalism and the rule of law in HK. Heck, forget calling it HK, its gonna be Xianggang or whatever name they will call the Shenzhen-Hong Kong merger city.
Language issues are the least of the problems, but it is significant. The PRC needs to cut out the voice of HK. That Cantonese, 'free' voice. A language whose usage raises questions about identity in other Chinese, like Minnan and Wu (If HK can have Cantonese, why can't shanghai have Wu?; A question I have heard passionately debated). Free markets, free ideas, No No No... All media, education and spoken language is to be 'nice, mellow, cultured, preferably BJ-accented, PTH'. And this Mandarin voice will set the BJ-approved social, political and legal agenda for you.
