VAMA : Too many automobile manufacturers in Vietnam

VietNet Bridge – Udo Loersch, Chairman of VAMA, said in a recent interview given to Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam that there were too many operational automobile manufacturers in Vietnam.

VietNamNet Bridge briefs the talk between Mr Loersch and the newspaper』s reporters.

It is said that automobile joint ventures are facing a lot of difficulties in Vietnam, especially as there is a tendency of importing cars for domestic sale. What do you say about this?

I』m not afraid of competition. Healthy competition will help all parties and it is good for the national economy. However, it is regrettable that sometimes the competition is not healthy.

What are the biggest difficulties automobile manufacturers are facing?

We cannot get timely information from the Government about a clear strategy on automobile industry for the next five or ten years (In fact, the Ministry of Industry has issued a strategy on automobile industry and supporting industries by 2010 – reporter). Therefore, we have a lot of difficulties while making investment decisions.

However, we still want to make commitments on long-term investment in Vietnam』s automobile industry. The Government should give more support to us, investors, by exchanging information and discussing arising problems.

Vietnamese people think that imports are always better than locally made cars. It is not true. Let』s take Mercedes Benz as an example. We regularly inspect the quality of cars made in Vietnam, carried out by our experts coming from our parent company in Germany. And the experts said that the factory in Vietnam is one of the best in the region.

In the world, automobile manufacturers tend to merge into each other in order to professionalise production, while Vietnamese enterprises rush to import car parts for domestic assembling (there are 35 assembling enterprises which are not VAMA members). It seems that Vietnamese enterprises run contrary to the tendency?

I think that there are too many assembling enterprises for Vietnam』s automobile industry. If the Government wants to have powerful manufacturers, it should focus on several companies only.

Which way do you think Vietnam』s automobile industry should go and how can it settle difficulties?

I think relevant ministries including the Ministries of Industry, Transport, Planning and Investment and local authorities should work out on a comprehensive and long-term plan for automobile industry development. 

As for supporting industries, I hope the Ministry of Planning and Investment will have suitable policies to encourage investment in producing car parts and accessories. Vietnam will not have a powerful automobile industry if it does not have developed supporting industries.

Moreover, tax policies should be amended so that car products become affordable for buyers, while ensuring benefit to manufacturers and car parts producers. Now Vietnam imposes a luxury tax of 50%, an overly high tax rate, and then VAT. I think the Government should lower the luxury tax.

I also want to say that the infrastructure should be upgraded, especially in Hanoi and HCM City. Many projects on bridges and roads have not been implemented, while others are very slow in execution.

Mercedes-Benz marks 200,000th car made in Vietnam



VNBusinessNews.com - Mercedes- Benz Vietnam on Friday celebrated the 200,000th car rolling off its production line, after 4 years of operation.

It was a GLK 4MATIC, a newly launched model which is sparking great interest among car lovers in Vietnam these days.

"The event has great meaning to us. It is a big mark of success for Mercedes-Benz in Vietnam. The 200,000 vehicles produced in 4 years is an impressive figure for a premium brand in Vietnam;' said Udo Loersch, general director of Mercedes-Benz Vietnam.

"It's also our long-term commitment in Vietnam. Through our continuous activities, we create value for our brand and customers;' he said.

Despite the market going down 30 percent in the first half of 2009, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam posted impressive year-on-year growth of 28 percent with more than 20,450 vehicles sold. Among them were up to 4640 passenger cars delivered to customers.

The good result is attributed to the success of both commercial and passenger vehicles and the newly launched GLK, according to MBY.

Mercedes- Benz Vietnam plans to grow at least 20 percent this year. As long as the government does not raise the import tax again next year, MBV will invest further in production and technology for continued growth in Vietnam, the company said.

Mercedes- Benz offers a full range of products to satisfy diversified customer demand.

In June, it received the Certificate of Merit from the HCM City Peoples' Committee as a great foreign investor. Mercedes-Benz Vietnam has also won "Market of the Year Award" from Daimler Group for its stunning performance as the quickest growing company.    (SGT)

Why do Vietnamese customers purchase locally-assembled cars?

VietNet Bridge – Most Vietnamese customers purchase autobile models assembled in Vietnam because they have a lower sale price than equivalent imports.

 

It is often asked why Vietnamese customers still purchase autos assembled in Vietnam, though they regularly complain a lot about these products and rarely praise them. Even so, the high sales of locally-assembled cars have been helping automobile joint ventures live well.

 

A poll organized by Thoi bao Kinh teVietnam (VN Economy) gives the answer.

 

On April 13, Thoi bao Kinh te posted a question to its readers: 「Why do you purchase locally assembled cars?」 and gave eight possible answers. In a month, the editorial board received 2,635 replies.

 

Fifty percent of the respondents said they purchased domestically assembled cars because 『the prices of the cars is lower than the price of cars entirely manufactured abroad. Five percent said with domestically assembled cars, they can feel more secure with post-sales service.

 

Nine percent preferred domestically assembled cars because they can repair and replace car parts more easily and cheaply. Two percent explained that if they purchase domestically assembled cars, they can easily contact manufacturers if there are any problems. Meanwhile, four percent believe that the locally assembled cars have been adapted to fit the conditions in Vietnam.  Five percent said that many models have proven to be not inferior to the quality of import products.

 

The sales price is by far the most important factor

 

Though it was anticipated that the survey would show that many people purchase domestically assembled cars because of their lower cost, the high percentage of readers (50%) who said they were most influenced by price was still a surprise to many people.

 

That explains why Vietnamese customers, though rating 『imported』 cars as 『better,』 still purchase the domestically assembled products. Even if it is clear that import products have better quality and better design than the vehicles assembled here, these factors do not overcome the price factor for the majority of car customers.

 

Domestic automobile manufacturers, who well understand their advantages, have been using the advantages to boost up sales.

 

In early 2009, Vidamco launched a diesel engine version of the Chevrolet Captiva, but it did not announce the sales price. Analysts intuited that Vidamco did not announce the sales price at the launching becauseToyota』s Fortuner, a competitor of the Captiva, was also about to be launched to the market

 

Only at the end of February, when Toyota launched its Fortuner, did Vidamco announce a sales price for Captiva which closely matched its rival』s price.

 

It was quite a surprise that 13 percent of respondents said they purchase domestically assembled cars because they want to support local automobile industry.  Experts pointed out that the support by domestic consumers is a very big advantage for the development of the automobile industry.

 

In the last 50 years, the South Korean automobile industry jumped from nowhere to the 5th position on the world』s automobile map. And a very important reason for this was the support of South Korean consumers for locally made products.  From the early 1960』s, when the South Korean automobile industry began taking shape, to now, South Koreans have inclined to choose Korean-made cars.
