How do you pronounce 蛤蟆?

 

Is it haa4 maa4?

 

And is is the same as in 蛤蟆功?

「蛤蟆」 is pronounced as 「HAA4 MAA4」 in most Cantonese dictionary and it's correct academically.

 

But in fact, Cantoners pronounce it as 「HAA1 MOU1」in the terms of「癩蛤蟆想食天鵝肉」&「蛤蟆功」.

 

Maybe It's caused by the miss of 「蝦毛」&「蛤蟆」 a few hundred years before.

 

But Actually「蛤蟆」 is not a frequent term in Cantonese and we prefer to  say 「蛤拐」or「蛤乸」.
