纹身在中国，起码可以上溯三千五百年，被用与刑法上，称为“黥”，又称“墨型”。
二千五百年前，移居的夏美夷人带着纹身从中国到日本，使纹身在日本发展成为高度的艺术。
第一个把纹身于一六九一年带回欧洲的航海者，被称为“纹身王子”，他身上共有三百三十八个纹身图案。
发现彩色纹 身是在新西兰的毛利人部落，公元十六,十七世纪西方水手把新西 兰的彩色纹身文化 带到了欧洲。
纹身如何传入美国，至今还没人知道。
第一次世界大站后，纹身者大都是女人，原因是为了纪念在战争中失去的爱人，它们一般纹上小鸟、蝴蝶、红玫瑰、或是爱人的名字。

纹身的方式有三种。第一种是毛利人流传下来的，用鲨鱼牙齿 及动物骨刺捆上木棒蘸上墨水，用小锤敲击入肤。第二种是用数根 针绑在一起捆在木棒上，手工点刺入肤。第三种是用电机带动针刺 入皮肤，此种方法是当今纹身师常用的方法。现代人对纹身的理解 又是包罗万象，极具个性化的。这种有稍微痛楚的永久性图案将伴 随着人的一生。这种身体语言的纪念性，激励性，解脱性，每个人 的理解又不尽相同。
