起源與發展
 
最初的地球日選擇在<A title=春分 href="http://zh.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E6%98%A5%E5%88%86&variant=zh-tw">春分</A><A title=节气 href="http://zh.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E8%8A%82%E6%B0%94&variant=zh-tw">節氣</A>，這一天在全世界的任何一個角落晝夜時長均相等，陽光可以同時照耀在南極點和北極點上，這代表了世界的平等，同時也象徵著人類要拋開彼此間的爭議和不同，和諧共存。傳統上在很多國家都有慶祝春分節氣的傳統。早期<A title=联合国 href="http://zh.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E8%81%94%E5%90%88%E5%9B%BD&variant=zh-tw">聯合國</A>也在每年的<A title=春分 href="http://zh.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E6%98%A5%E5%88%86&variant=zh-tw">春分</A>舉行世界地球日的活動。

現在人們普遍認為1970年4月22日在美國發生的第一屆地球日活動是世界上最早的大規模群眾性環境保護運動，這次運動催化了人類現代環境保護運動的發展，促進了已開發國家環境保護立法的進程，並且直接催生了1972年聯合國第一次人類環境會議。而1970年活動的組織者丹尼斯·海斯也被人們稱為地球日之父。

１９７０年４月２２号，美国首次举行咗声势浩大嘅「地球日」活动——此乃人类历史以来第一次规模宏大嘅群众性环境保护运动。作为人类现代环保运动嘅开端，「地球日」活动推动咗多个国家环境法规嘅建立。
 
１９９０年４月２２号，全世界一百四十几个国家、二亿几人同时喺各地举行咗多种多样嘅环境保护宣传活动。呢次活动得到联合国嘅首肯认同。从此，「地球日」就成为咗「世界地球日」。
 
其实每年嘅「世界地球日」并冇一个国际统一嘅特定主题，佢嘅总主题始终都系「只有一个地球」，中国今年嘅主题系「善待地球——从身边嘅小事做起」，并同国际地球年（２００７～２００９）中国行动口号一致——认识地球，和谐发展。
