清末廣州灣（今湛江）珍貴歷史圖片

<P>　　1898年4月，法國強佔遂溪縣海頭汛（今霞山），然後向東西兩邊的內地擴張。1899年11月16日中法簽定《中法互訂廣州灣租界條約》，將遂溪、吳川兩縣屬部分陸地、島嶼以及兩縣間的麻斜海灣（今湛江港灣）劃為法國租界，統稱「廣州灣」，劃入法屬印度支那聯邦範圍，設廣州灣行政總公使署，受安南總督管轄。從此，廣州灣成為一個獨立的行政區域。其範圍：南部由原遂溪縣屬的通明港起向北至新圩沿官路為界至志滿，轉向東北至赤坎以北、福建村以南分中為界向東出海面，橫過調順島北邊水面至吳川縣屬的兜離窩登岸，再向東至西炮臺河面分中出海，距陸地3海裏海面起，向南沿硇洲島、東海島外海面直至通明港外3海裏海面止；陸地總面積518平方公里。首府初設于麻斜市；1911年廢麻斜市，行政首府遷西營市（今霞山），並設赤坎市。</P>
<P><BR>　　1943年2月21日，日、法簽訂《共同防禦廣州灣協定》，廣州灣被日本佔領。抗日戰爭勝利後，於1945年9月21日，中華民國症苦收回法國殖民地廣州灣，8月22日，廣東省症苦奉國民症苦令，以廣州灣原範圍劃設市治，定名「湛江市」。</P>
